September minutes

Mason Dixon Member Mtg., September 15, 2009

President’s Welcome - Ramona welcomed everyone back to a “new year” and introduced 2 new members. Barbara Barton, the current Potomac Thrummers President, is returning to Mason Dixon after an absence. Her first teacher was Mary Shepherd Burton and Barbara has been hooking more than 30 years. Cyndra Mogayzel joined us last fall and started hooking last March with Jane Halliwell Green. She also attends Anne Arundel Rug Hookers. Ramona encouraged members to buddy up with new members to help them feel welcomed throughout the year. Nametags were unavailable today and Ramona would like to know who has them.

Secretary Report-
June minutes, written by Louise Miller, were read and accepted.

Treasurer’s Report
The report, given by Ivi Collier, was presented on the overhead projector, explained, and accepted.

Buckeystown Report - Pat Donoho sent registration info by email but welcomed others, who need a hard copy, to inform her. If you would like to reserve a spot in a class and would like to pay later, please let Pat know. We reserve 6 spots for commuters. Fifteen people has registered thus far.

Future Workshops - Joanne Henderson had seen Peggy Hanna present to Blue and Gray before and asked Peggy to show her unique way of color planning to us at the October mtg. More about the Nov. program in the future.

Cynthia Norwood’s workshop Nov. 12 -14, 2009 is filling up and us of today it will be opened to ladies outside of the guild. She will be lodging at Joanne’s with no charge to the guild. Many members praised her teaching style and enthusiasm! Joanne showed a hooked and braided piece she purchased this weekend from Janice Sonnen who may come for a program in the future.

Presentation to Arlene - Jean Schulz presented a gift card to Arlene Smith for her devoted work to the guild and as librarian for many years. She told several stories relating how Arlene kept her cool and gave much of her time and spirit to the club. Arlene says she’s “not going any place “---“except to Barnes and Noble” says Jean.

New Committee Members - A Membership Chairman has been appointed by the Presidentand approved by the Board. Violet Hopkins will work in this capacity with the Treasurer. Violet will accept your changes in email or home address or phone contacts. Violet will be accepting your $7.50 for local chapter dues (Ivi explained how collecting the national dues, $26.00, and then sending that money out right away pushes us over the $25,000 non-profit limit.) This is a request made to members, not a requirement. Violet supplied labels for members to use on envelopes to National ATHA. On your ATHA newsletter cover sheet you will find your renewal date for the national dues. Check with Violet to know when your local dues should be paid. Membership lists will be sent shortly after the October mtg.

Please see the Program committee members (Joanne Henderson and Barbara Ditto) if you have any suggestions for presenters for our monthly programs.

Newsletter - Fran was not present to give a report and Ramona asked members to contact her if they have not received a hard copy of the newsletter and need one due to not having email access. Ramona thanked Deanna for writing several articles for the newsletter.

State Fair - Ramona reported on the confusion with the categories and stated they would be more clearly identified next year. Our demonstration hours were cut back and don’t know if we will be invited back next year or how much we will be paid for this year. Brochures were missing this year and this issue will be resolved next year. Three separate complaints were registered with the superintendent of the fair about very negative comments regarding judging and particular rugs. Please do not complain about the judging in front of others or make negative comments in the future. If we’re asked back….. there will be a committee to handle the setting up of the booth, organizing volunteers, and assisting with necessities for the booth and demonstrations. Fair officials extended thanks to Pat Donoho and Joanne Henderson for all their help with the exhibit. Joanne said our club income will suffer when we can’t make the $660 for demonstrating. Many thanks to Doris Slye who stayed later when her replacement didn’t show up, Angie Rowland , Violet Hopkins, Sharon Kollman, Julia Kappler, Ange Banko, Joanne Gerwig, and any others who donated their time at the fair encouraging others to try our art form.

New Business
The Board will be discussing the proposed budget at their Oct. 9 meeting. Please inform Ramona if you have any recommendations for the budget.

Deanna introduced the idea of having Mason Dixon ATHA membership cards so that members can receive a “VIP Discount Card” from Joann Fabric and Craft Stores thereby receiving a 10% discount there and perhaps at other businesses. Ramona said the cards will be available to members at the October mtg.

Please send any news, illnesses, deaths to Ramona so Ginny Fan can send appropriate greetings.

Deanna suggested bringing your newly completed rugs to hide under a black cloth for “unveiling” after the business meeting. All that diligent hooking will receive fellow members admiration!! Doris Aymar seconded this motion! “Practice your ooooing and aahhhhhing, Ladies!” says Pat Donoho!

Ramona encouraged members to send in their beautiful creations to the ATHA newsletter, adding that other members would help with writing the articles, if necessary.

Respectfully submitted,
Deanna Williford, recording secretary
